Foça architecture is known for narrow streets, a courtyard, a flat or low-pitch roof, thick walls and measured window openings. The pale yellow, beige and slowly greying tones of the stone depend on the local quarry and on the angle of the sun. The façade stays quiet; ornament sits in the stone itself and in the shadow line of the eaves.
Character does not arrive with a copied stone cladding. A thin veneer can hide a modern box. In a Foça stone house the wall is both structure and climate regulator. Traditional masonry is often 40 to 80 cm thick; that mass gives thermal inertia. Small openings cut the midday light in summer. The courtyard gathers breeze and makes shade.
Respecting the local silhouette is also part of conservation and planning rules. That advantage disappears with too much glass and with large openings facing west. Afternoon sun in Foça can heat a living room quickly.
In winter, unheated stone warms slowly. Modern comfort does not deny that inertia; it completes it with insulation, heating distribution and airtight joinery. Underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators can work with stone and screed. Sudden, high-temperature blown air raises the risk of cracks in the wall and of uncomfortable stratification.
Moisture and salt are the quiet enemies of a coastal stone house. A capillary break at the foundation, sound external drainage, a robust gutter and the right render on the seaward face set the life of the building. The sentence that stone already breathes must not become an excuse to ignore water in the basement.
Craft, detail and the seismic fact
A stone wall finishes in the hand more than on the drawing. The mason reads the grain of the stone; corners, jambs and arches are not stacked like a production line. In rubble masonry, bonding stones, staggered joints and the rule that vertical joints do not stack are required for both structure and appearance.

Horizontal ring beams, corner ties, a clear roof diagram and foundation continuity put the weight of the stone on a safe path. The interior of a traditional stone house does not have to be dark and damp. The plan can keep the courtyard and sofa tradition while solving open living, kitchen and wet rooms to today's standard. Plot, orientation and view
The plot is the first material of the stone house. In Foça the view often lies west or southwest; the same bearing brings the hardest summer sun. The answer is not to turn a glass wall toward the view; it is to filter light with eaves, shutters, courtyard walls and shade.
The north face stays cool and damp; wet rooms, stores or circulation can sit there. The south admits winter sun; in summer it is cut by eaves or by the shadow of an upper floor. Prevailing wind in Foça shifts with the sea and the topography. Open living is placed so that breeze can pass through the courtyard; bedrooms are protected from night humidity and noise.
Slope and rocky ground take the foundation out of a simple excavation. Rock anchors, stepped seating and retaining walls affect both cost and silhouette. Existing trees and garden walls are kept where possible; an old stone wall already prepares the courtyard of the new house.
