A milking facility must resolve animal flow, hygiene, structural loads and utilities together. Planning decisions shape operating cost and milk quality for years.
Process first, equipment second
A milking facility is not a box for a milking machine. It is a process building that runs from the waiting area to the milking place, then to the milk room and the technical rooms. The most common error on agricultural sites around İzmir and Foça is that the building is fitted around equipment after the equipment has already been chosen. The sequence runs the other way: target herd, milking type, expansion scenario and site conditions are fixed first; structure, floor falls, ventilation and utilities follow.
Atlasya İnşaat keeps that sequence, with roughly forty years of site experience on agricultural buildings. The headings below are the operating and engineering decisions that should be locked early in the design of a milking building.
Capacity, flow and a separate roof
The first decision is not today’s head count but target capacity. If the herd will grow within five to ten years, the parlour should sit on a grid that can grow; the waiting yard should be able to enlarge in stages; the milk room should keep reserve volume for cooling. Otherwise the bottleneck arrives in the second season.
The place where milk is taken and the place where animals live should not share the same air and odour volume. A milking unit under a roof separate from the barn helps hygiene, noise, odour and later growth. A solution kept under one roof can look cheaper on day one; milk quality and the separation of sick animals pay for years.
The functional diagram separates these spaces:
- Waiting area and animal entry and exit corridors
- Milking place (geometry differs for parallel, herringbone, rotary or robotic systems)
- Milk room, cooling and wash technical volume
- Plant room, electrical board and standby power
- Staff, hygiene lock, store and office
- Wastewater, slurry and wash water management
Animal flow is one way and without crossings. Overlap between a staff or tanker route and an animal route is both a stress and a hygiene risk. The return after milking joins feeding and resting with wind and sun in mind. In the waiting area, about 1.75 m² of free space per cow reduces crowding and stress before milking.
Milking type draws the building
Parallel and herringbone systems need clear dimensions for span, operator pit and escape routes. Pit depth is often thought in the range of 60 to 90 cm, the working strip 40 to 60 cm; a fall of 1.5 to 2 percent on the pit floor sheds wash water. In robotic milking, free cow traffic, floor friction and the protection of power and data lines come to the front. Building height is for maintenance access, air volume and daylight; a low eaves line stores heat in an Aegean summer.
Floors, falls and the hygiene shell
In a milking facility the floor is as decisive as the structure. Concrete grade, surface finish, joint layout and falls control the discharge of wash water and slurry. The waiting area needs a slip resistant, wear resistant surface; the pit needs a finish that resists chemicals and washes easily. Too little fall leaves standing water and organic load; too much fall disturbs stance and raises slip risk.
The milk room is a food space. A floor without cracks that can be disinfected; a radius at the junction of wall and floor; a washable wall up to splash height: these are not negotiated. Porous materials and timber are choices to avoid in milking spaces. Grating, channel section and gully spacing are calculated from wash flow. Corners, thresholds and column bases must not become faces that cannot be swept.
Ventilation, light, heat and salt
On the Aegean coast, summer heat and humidity meet winter wind and cool nights. In places such as Foça, where the sea is felt, salt air puts corrosion of metalwork and ventilation plant on the table. Natural ventilation (open eaves, ridge void, side panels) is thought together with mechanical support. Air speed stays in the animals’ comfort range; a direct draught raises stress in the waiting area.
Summer shading and winter closable openings can be solved on the same structural system. Daylight is not only energy saving; it matters for animal behaviour. A roof light should not drop direct sun onto the animals’ backs. Lighting is staged to the milking programme; luminaires in the milk room suit food hygiene. Silage and feed stores sit opposite the prevailing wind so that odour and flies do not enter the milking air.
Structure, loads and earthquake
An internal column should not cut the animal path. Steel frames, trusses or portal systems are therefore common. Snow, wind, hanging equipment, feeder connections and solar panels that may be added later sit in the structure from the start. The seismic fact of İzmir takes foundations and anchorage out of the template of a “standard farm shed”. Ground investigation, foundation type and anchor length are read together with the combination of wind and earthquake.
If the pit, channels and tanks interrupt foundation continuity, those voids are modelled in detail. On work near the coast, galvanizing quality, protection after welding and the column base detail set service life. Cladding and insulation are chosen so that condensation is held in the milk room and cold spaces. Slurry acids and wash chemicals raise the protection class of concrete and steel surfaces.
Water, power, milk line, waste
Wash water, drinking water and technical water are routed separately. Pressure, flow and hot water demand are calculated from the milking and CIP cycle. Because milking, cooling and ventilation can run together, contract capacity and the standby generator must rest on a real load profile. Milk line and tank need food contact materials and drainable, sloped pipework.
Wastewater and slurry are separated from rainwater; otherwise storage and treatment swell. Local discharge conditions are asked at the start at İzmir scale. Fire water, tanker approach and slurry collection belong in the site layout. For biosecurity, vehicle routes and animal routes are split; wheel and boot hygiene is solved at the door, not added later.
Site, orientation and a second stage
The building is placed for prevailing wind, sun and land slope. The waiting area should not take direct afternoon sun in summer. The milk tanker must not cut the animal path. Turning circles for feed lorries, slurry trailers and the fire service are measured on site, not left on paper. Staff parking sits on the dirty side of the hygiene lock.
Expansion is not the sentence “we will add a bay later”. The structural grid, roof falls, channel levels and electrical and mechanical routes are left with a reserve so that a second stage is possible. That is a small share of the first investment and a large saving later. If a turn to robotic milking is possible, free traffic space and a data spine are thought of today.
Permits and disciplines at one table
On agricultural buildings, planning, agricultural and environmental permits should move together with structural, electrical and mechanical design. The equipment supplier’s layout must not contradict architecture and structure. Early coordination reduces the revisions that mean walls broken and beams cut on site. Around Foça and İzmir, site selection, ground, wind, corrosion and the permit process are read as one package.
